Karim Ziad
Performing October 10 + 11, 2024
Karim Ziad is one of the most influential modern drummers from the Arab world. Considered the Tony Allen of North Africa, he was one of the first drummers to bring the rhythms of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia to the drum kit. After performing in a hard rock band in his youth in Algiers, Karim relocated to Paris where he established himself as an acclaimed drummer for notable groups including Cheb Mami, Khaled and Idir. In the 90’s, he was one of the last drummers of Joe Zawinul’s Syndicate. Also a talented guitarist and guembri player, Karim’s inventive playing and songwriting melds influences from North African music, including Chaâbi, Gnawa and Raï, with contemporary jazz and electronica. At Habibi Fest, he will perform his seminal work from Ifrikiya and Chebiba featuring Mehdi Nassouli on vocals.
